LASH SHEDDING AS PART OF A NATURAL CYCLE

LASH SHEDDING AS PART OF A NATURAL CYCLE

Just as the skin naturally sheds dead skin cells every 28-40 days on the average, the hair does too. Everyday we lose about 5-7 lashes which is subtle, healthy and normal. Although, there are times when clients are fussing over increased eyelash extensions fall-out. Many things can be considered like- how was the after-care? Was it applied following such humidity levels and temperature requirements?..or is it maybe because of such seasonal lash shedding? Yup, that is one thing too.

Seasonal lash shedding occurs with a higher number of lash fallouts in the Spring and Fall. Because natural lash shedding is fine and subtle, it often goes unnoticed until eyelash extensions are attached making it more noticeable than usual. This is when it gets critical, that is why educating your clients also plays an important role in managing expectations on the retention of eyelash extensions.

Intense rise in temperature and exposure to sunlight is a big factor in the lash shedding season. Though there is a certain rise in lash strands falling out, it is still considered pretty normal because it is a just part of the natural hair growth cycle

The first three stages of the hair growth cycle- the anagen, catagen, and telogen include the maturation and growth stage of hair and the production of new hair by the hair follicle. While the last stage -the exogen, is when the old hair detaches from the root to make way for the new hair.

1.ANAGEN (Growing Phase)

During the anagen phase, the hair follicles are pushing out hairs that will continue to grow until they’re cut or until they reach the end of their lifespan and fall out. You can apply lash extensions during this stage but keep in mind that lashes are actively growing that’s why it can lead to uneven styles.

2.CATAGEN (Transition Phase)

When anagen phase ends, the hair follicles shrink and the hair growth slows down. The hair also separates from the bottom of the hair follicle but stays in place all throughout its last days of growing. This is the best stage to add eyelash extensions.

3.TELOGEN (Resting Phase)

Hairs stop growing during this phase, it doesn't fall out yet, either. It is also the phase where new hair starts to form in the follicles.

4.EXOGEN (Shedding Phase)

Basically just an extension of the telogen phase wherein hair is shed from the surface of the skin. New hair also starts growing as the old hair falls Out.

In some studies, authors found out that there is a link between sunshine hours and percentage of hairs in the telogen phase. They found that late summer and early Fall (August, September and October) were periods of the highest telogen percentages and December January and February were the periods of minimal lash shedding as part of a natural cycle.

WHAT TO AVOID DURING THE LASH SHEDDING SEASON?

  • Try not to use oil-based cosmetics and skin care products as it may weaken the bond of eyelash extensions even more.
  • Don’t ever try to pull your lashes or vigorously rub your eyes. Just keep those hands off them, except when you are cleaning your lashes.
  • Never sleep on your face because it can cause damage not only to your eyelash extensions but also to your natural lashes.
  • If possible, avoid direct exposure to sunlight as your lashes are more sensitive during these days.

SO, HOW DO YOU KEEP UP WITH YOUR LASH HEALTH DURING THESE STAGES?

  • Good nutrition is always an answer. Because hair is made of proteins, it is essential to keep up with protein intake which can include lean meats, fish and legumes. Food with a rich source of folic acid also promotes healthy hair growth.
  • Avoid stress. Stress is associated with several premature hair-loss conditions.
  • Proper lash care- with all that you’ve gone through, having your eyelash extensions attached to eventually shedding them out at least in the natural way, you have to always keep in mind your lash care routines. Using products with ingredients that would nourish and protect both the natural lashes and extensions from damaging substances like the Forabeli Lash Shampoo would definitely give you an easy time managing those fall outs.
